Simply put, Chiropractic is the art of releasing abnormal stresses on the body to allow for full expression of the nervous system. That’s quite a mouthful, right? To unpack that, we need to break it apart into bite-size increments:
- Abnormal Stress – Our body is in constant play and balance of tension and compression forces. These not only play out in every movement we perform, but also allow for adaptation and compensation throughout our lives. It’s one of the many things that helps us survive this ever-changing world. Tension and compression can come from our posture, our repetitive movements, and even from our emotional states. The Chiropractic adjustment helps to bring this tension-compression see-saw into balance to allow our body to release any stuck patterns and to function at ease.
- Full Expression – Full expression of the body through the nervous system looks like health, plain and simple. It is cells replenishing and healing, food digesting, brain and organ function optimization, clear and focused thoughts, smooth and coordinated movements, and proper and clear sensations. It is all the things that make a living thing a living thing. The truth is, all living things want to be healthy, and disease doesn't just show up overnight. It comes from a long period of the body and nervous system not functioning properly, leading first to dis-ease (a lack of ease) and then to disease.
- Nervous System – The master control organ. The reason Chiropractic was founded on the function and health of the nervous system is because even back in 1895 Chiropractors knew that the nervous system controlled everything else in the body and, therefore, controlled health. The nervous system not only senses and interprets your surroundings, allowing you to make decisions based on your environment to ensure survival, but it also coordinates every single function in your body to keep you alive today, tomorrow, and as long as possible. By working on the spine and the joints of the body, the Chiropractor can directly influence the function and health of the nervous system, from the brain to the spinal cord to each and every nerve fiber that controls your body.
